The Global Imperative: Building and Strengthening
Collaborative Communities
The 27th Annual NC Teacher Education Forum will be held Thursday-Friday, September 24-25, 2009, at the North Raleigh Hilton, 3415 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh, NC. The conference theme is The Global Imperative: Building and Strengthening Collaborative Communities. You are invited to submit a proposal that illustrates how collaborative communities of learning can be constructed or strengthened in North Carolina, and beyond, within the context of globalization. Proposals from all areas of educator preparation, including arts and sciences, will be welcomed. (Please note the separate Student Poster Session requirements below.) The following are the strands that may be addressed:
- Preparation of High Quality Teachers, School Leaders, and/or School Support Personnel;
- Action Research, Teacher Inquiry, Self-Study Practices, or Transformative Education;
- Curriculum Development, Instruction, Assessment, and/or Going Green;
- Cultural, Social, or Gender Issues;
- Collaborative Partnerships;
- Recruiting, Retaining, and/or Mentoring Educators;
- Utilizing Best Practices;
- Building Diverse/Equitable Communities, and/or Globalization;
- Developing Research Bases; or
- Supporting Learning through Technology.
Interested presenters should submit a proposal by May 27, 2009, via e-mail attachment (MS Word format, please) to Randy Kohlenberg at rbkohlen@uncg.edu. The proposal file should include in the subject line the lead presenter’s LAST NAME, FIRST INITIAL, hyphen, and FIRST SEVERAL WORDS OF THE TITLE. (e.g., Al Smith’s file is titled SmithA-ProposalTitle). Following this format will expedite the distribution to the committee members who will review all proposals (see website for evaluation criteria). Lead presenters/contact persons who are invited to present will be contacted in early August 2009. If no response is received after your submission, contact R. Kohlenberg.
Forum sessions will be either twenty-five (25) or fifty (50) minutes in length, including time for questions and discussion. Proposals should include the information below in the order listed. This information is embedded in the proposal template that should be used for submission (access at http://www.nc-acte.org). Along with the Call for Proposals, criteria for the review of the proposals are located on that website.
- Cover Page that includes:
- Title of presentation (15 word limit);
- List of presenter(s) with the contact person listed first (See Limits on the Number of Presentations below; correspondence will be with contact person only.);
- Institutional affiliation, the address, telephone number, and e-mail addresses for all presenters;
- Strand identification—one strand (or a maximum of two strands) should be identified as the focus of the proposal;
- Abstract that will appear as the session description in the program book (50-word limit—Use the word count tool in the word processing software program [in Word: under tools] to verify compliance.);
- Session agenda and objectives; and
- Technology requirements (an overhead projector and screen will be provided at no cost. Any other technical equipment will be the responsibility of the presenters at their expense. Internet access MAY be available, but is not guaranteed).
- Proposal. No more than three single spaced typed pages with one inch margins, 12-point Times New Roman font that includes:
- The purpose/rationale/literature review,
- A description of the information to be presented,
- The conclusion/synthesis of ideas presented, and
- Bibliographical citations as appropriate.
- Note: This information will be included in an electronic version of the Conference Proceedings to be posted on the NC-ACTE website.
- In subject line of the e-mail as stated above, type lead presenter’s LAST NAME, FIRST INITIAL, hyphen, and FIRST SEVERAL WORDS OF THE TITLE.
Limits on the Number of Presentations:
- A person may be lead presenter on only ONE proposal.
- A person may be second presenter (or another position) on a maximum of TWO proposals (or the lead presenter on one and another position on one).

All presenters are required to register for the conference.
Student Research Poster Session
The Student Research Poster Session is intended for current undergraduate or graduate students. Scheduled for Thursday, September 24, 2009, at 3:00 p.m., the registration fee for research poster session presenters will be at a special student registration fee of $50.00. All student registrations from the same institution must be submitted as a group, including a verification of student status by the dean or licensure officer. Students in Professional Education Programs are invited to submit proposals that describe any of the following:
- Research projects related to P-12 education
- Research projects related to professional education
- Projects highlighting innovative methods
- Others
Student proposals should include the following which is embedded in the Student Poster Session Proposal Template on the website at http://www.nc-acte.org. The Project Summary will be included in the Conference Proceedings.

- Indicate whether you are an undergraduate or a graduate student:

- Project Summary: Describe the project (250 word limit), including the content that will be presented in the poster session.
- Note: Any technical equipment will be the responsibility of the presenter(s) or sponsoring institution.
Proposals for the Special Student Poster Session should be submitted as a Word document via e-mail attachment no later than May 27, 2009, to Randy Kohlenberg at rbkohlen@uncg.edu. A committee will review all proposals, and in early August 2009, notify those who are invited to present. For questions regarding the Student Poster Session, contact 336.254.5502. If no response is received after your proposal has been submitted contact, R. Kohlenberg.

The Global Imperative: Building and StrengtheningCollaborative Communities
Proposals will be considered on the basis of the following criteria:
- Clear focus, rationale, model, theory, or philosophy upon which the proposal is based;
- Appropriate design, methodology, procedure, and/or organization appropriate;
- Synthesis of ideas, findings and/or data appear to be complete;
- Conclusion(s) contribute valuable insights into teaching/learning and/or demonstrates promising practices, originality or relevance to teacher education; and
- Demonstration of the session’s value and general interest to conference participants.
PROPOSALS THAT DO NOT ADHERE TO THE STATED GUIDELINES WILL BE RETURNED.
The Program Committee will select proposals to fill concurrent session slots. Concurrent sessions are planned to be either 25 or 50 minutes in length, depending upon the number of speakers and the content planned for the session. Lead presenters/contact persons who are invited to present will be contacted around the first week of August 2009.
Concurrent sessions will be scheduled for the afternoon of Thursday, September 24, and for the morning of Friday, September 25. Additional information about the sessions and other events will appear on the website when it becomes available.
