About . . .
North Carolina Association of Colleges and Teacher Educators

The North Carolina Association of Colleges and Teacher Educators is the organization that unites teacher educators in both public and private colleges and universities, staff and faculty in state created initiatives and consortiums, and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Originally separate, two teacher education organizations mergedin 2005to form the NC-ACTE. Always cooperative, the two organizations came together every fall to sponsor jointly the NC Teacher Education Forum that celebrated the 25th year September 2007. NC-ACTE, the state unit of the American Association of Colleges and Teacher Educators and the Association of Teacher Education, is governed by a Board that represents the diversity and demographic location of teacher education programs across North Carolina and which meets monthly. Dr. Randy Kohlenberg, Professor of Music and Music Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, assumed the Presidency of the North Carolina Association of Colleges and Teacher Educators (NC-ACTE) during the 2009 Fall Forum in Raleigh, NC.

Through the reorganization of the NC-ACTE, an Executive Secretary position was announced in Spring 2007. Wayne Dillon, the unanimous choice by the Executive Board, was named to this position. Among a number of activities, Mr. Dillon, who resides in Fuquay-Varina, will represent the NC-ACTE organization at various state and national meetings, advise the board about current issues, and continue his active involvement in teacher education in North Carolina. Following a successful career in the public schools, Mr. Dillon served as a consultant in the NC Department of Public Instruction for 24 years, beginning as a Consultant in Guidance, followed by 11 years in the instructional area, and later as a Consultant and Chief Consultant in Teacher Education. Following his retirement from the State in 1995, he served as an Assistant Professor and later as Director of Teacher Education in the School of Education at Campbell University. Following his retirement from Campbell in 2003, he has continued to serve as an adjunct faculty member at Campbell, supervising teacher education candidates in field experiences. Since his second retirement, he also has served in a consultant role for teacher education programs at St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Southeastern College at Wake Forest, and Peace College.

CONFERENCES: The NC-ACTE sponsors two conferences for the membership each year. The Spring Teacher Education Forum (watch for the registration form), so named because it is a one day event, is held on a Friday in April. This symposium focuses upon relevant topics in North Carolina teacher education and features prominent national and state speakers including personnel from the NC Department of Public Instruction. The Spring Conference is held in rotating locations across the state. The Annual Fall NC Teacher Education Conaference held in Raleigh, is a two-day conference that focuses upon collaboration among the members. National and state speakers highlight the program that also features research presentations in concurrent sessions by members and a student research poster session. Luncheons are highlighted by a presentation by the NC Teacher of the Year and an update by Dr. Kathy Sullivan, Senior Policy Advisor to the NC State Board of Education and Representative from the NC Department of Public Instruction.

MEMBERSHIP in the NC-ACTE includes the faculty within private and public institutions and public agencies across North Carolina that foster teacher education. Dues are paid by each member institution, and therefore, all faculty who are involved in teacher education are automatically members. The college/univeristy membership includes not only faculty in education units, but also those who are involved in the specialty and content areas. Persons involved in teacher education support agencies also are members, as well as staff in related organizations.
